Welcome to this introduction to the
AUSTRALIAN BATTERY INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIION LIMITED (ABIA).
ABIA was formed in late 1990 to serve the interests of Australian companies involved in the wholesaling of replacement
automotive batteries in the Australian market place. Membership coverage now accounts for approximately 90% of
automotive battery volume in Australia. Since inception ABIA has been involved as the wholesale automotive battery
industry representative with bodies such as ACCC, Environment Australia, MVRIC (NSW), Advisory Committee for the
Transport of Dangerous Goods etc. In the latter case, key concessions have been granted to the Association's Members
in respect to the Australian Dangerous Goods Code ADG6 requirements that apply to the transport of automotive lead acid
batteries.
Representation in the Association ranges from multinationals to sole proprietors involving both local manufacture and
importation, with individual distribution coverage varying from national, multi state and regional.
General Meetings are presently scheduled for three times per year via rotation through Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and
Melbourne for February, June and October. The October meeting (the Annual General Meeting) is typically scheduled for
Sydney.
