Welcome to this introduction to the
AUSTRALIAN BATTERY INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIION LIMITED (ABIA).

ABIA was formed in late 1990 to serve the interests of Australian companies involved in the wholesaling of replacement automotive batteries in the Australian market place. Membership coverage now accounts for approximately 90% of automotive battery volume in Australia. Since inception ABIA has been involved as the wholesale automotive battery industry representative with bodies such as ACCC, Environment Australia, MVRIC (NSW), Advisory Committee for the Transport of Dangerous Goods etc. In the latter case, key concessions have been granted to the Association's Members in respect to the Australian Dangerous Goods Code ADG6 requirements that apply to the transport of automotive lead acid batteries.

Representation in the Association ranges from multinationals to sole proprietors involving both local manufacture and importation, with individual distribution coverage varying from national, multi state and regional.

General Meetings are presently scheduled for three times per year via rotation through Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for February, June and October. The October meeting (the Annual General Meeting) is typically scheduled for Sydney.

ABIA is an Associate Member of Battery Council International

ABIA is dedicated to responsible recycling programs for spent automotive battery arisings. The Association's most recent audit of Australian recycling rates for spent automotive lead acid batteries (covering the three years ended June 2001) indicated recovery approaching 96%, and reflects maintenance of Australia's world leading automotive battery 'cradle to grave' recycling outcomes. That such recycling rates continue to be achieved via voluntary collection schemes and without the need for government intervention programs should be a matter of great pride to all concerned.
